New York City’s Best Dive Bars takes you on a tour of the five boroughs’ dingiest, awesomest watering holes; it's a great resource whether you’re looking to live dangerously or simply get plastered on a budget. Following a discussion of the book, Westhoff will lead intrepid bargoers on a tour of the dives to be found in our own neighborhood. Fort Greene-based journalist and civil rights lawyer Alia Malek is the daughter of Syrian immigrants, and for years she found herself being asked by Americans to translate the Middle East and by folks in the Middle East to explain America. Her first book, A Country Called Amreeka, just published in paperback, is the story of the last forty-plus years of American history, told through the eyes of Arab Americans. Each chapter describes a familiar event in U.S. history and invites readers to live that moment in time in the skin of one Arab American. Join us for a reading and discussion with Malek of the contemporary Arab American experience and its importance in understanding our nation and our world, including a slide show featuring some of the characters featured in the book.

Her new book, And the Pursuit of Happiness, is Kalman's yearlong investigation in words and pictures of democracy and how it works, as serialized in the New York Times. Energized and inspired by the 2008 elections, on inauguration day Kalman traveled to Washington, D.C., launching a national tour that would take her from a town hall meeting in Newfane, Vermont, to the inner chambers of the Supreme Court. The observations she makes as she travels charm and inform, and her route is always one of fascinating indirection. At this Election Day event, Kalman shows slides of the images from the book and talks about her journey as a citizen and artist at Greenlight.

National Reading Group Month (NRGM) was launched in 2007 by the Women’s National Book Association (WNBA), to highlight the role of book groups in American cultural and literary life, and to enable more readers to get connected with reading groups in their community. Greenlight is proud to host the third annual WNBA-New York City chapter NRGM event with a star-studded panel of local authors talking about their work. At the reception preceding and following the panel, readers will have the chance to sign up to get information about Greenlight’s in-house reading groups (which will begin meeting in January), connect with other local reading groups, or register their existing reading group with Greenlight for special group discounts. Mo Willems kicks off the Knuffle Bunny Free World Tour in Brooklyn, where it all started!
Long-time Brooklynite Mo Willems will be back in town to celebrate the release of Knuffle Bunny Free, the final book in his critically-acclaimed Knuffle Bunny series. WORD and Greenlight Bookstore are proud to be co-hosting him for a spectacular evening of reading, discussion, and activities.Mo and a special surprise traveling companion (just the right size for young ones to hug!) will visit, and Mo will read a selection of his books, including Knuffle Bunny Free.
This event will take place on Wednesday, September 29th at 6pm at the Brooklyn Public Library, Central Branch. Each store will have a limited supply of tickets available to our customers. Tickets are free with the purchase of Knuffle Bunny Free and each ticket admits one adult and one child. Activities and giveaways hosted by HarperCollins are included, and other Mo Willems titles will be available for purchase the night of the event. Mo will be signing books after his reading.
Tickets can be purchased from Greenlight Bookstore over the phone or in person, while supplies last. There will be no paper tickets issued; all attendees will be on a list and will need to show photo ID at the event. In June 2001, Rahna Reiko Rizzuto went to Hiroshima to interview survivors of the atomic bomb detonation, in search of a deeper understanding of her war-torn heritage. Then the attacks on September 11 changed everything. The survivors’ carefully constructed memories were shattered, causing them to relive their agonizing experiences and to open up to Rizzuto in astonishing ways. Rizzuto’s narrative of the survivors’ stories is intertwined with the story of her own crumbling marriage and ambivalence about being a wife and mother, and the parallel narratives explore the role of memory in all our lives. Rizzuto talks about these themes this evening with her friend and former student Kathryn Cullen-Dupont, an associate adjunct professor at Pratt Institute and author of several books on women's studies.

Our talented neighbor Ghita Schwarz is a civil rights litigator specializing in immigrants’ rights, and the child of postwar Jewish immigrants. In her debut novel Displaced Persons, Ghita distills the disparate experiences of the hundreds of thousands of ordinary men, women and children who lived as refugees following World War II, living in camps in Allied-occupied Europe before buildi...ng new lives, families and homelands around the world. In haunting, unsentimental prose that mimics the characters’ native cadences of Yiddish and Polish, the novel explores the self-conscious strivings of a community that sees survival as a lifelong project, and the ordinary, imperfect people who are neither mythically noble nor irrevocably broken. On the third Thursday of every month, join Bob Powers (author of Happy Cruelty Day) and Jason Reich (former writer for The Daily Show), as they welcome the city's best humor writers for a night of wine-addled text-based hilarity.
Larry Doyle (author of I Love You, Beth Cooper) is the author of Go, Mutants!, the story of a melting-pot society populated by the aliens and humans of 1950s space-invader movies, in which a brooding blue rebel with a giant brain grapples with prejudice and hormones in that most horrific of earthly battlegrounds—high school.
Michael Rubens (a former Daily Show producer) brings us The
Sheriff of Yrnameer, a sprawling space opera starring a hapless bounty hunter who finds himself on the last planet without corporate sponsorship, reluctantly fighting outlaws and trying to avoid having alien eggs laid in his brain.
Robin Epstein is the co-author of So Sue Me, Jackass: Avoiding Legal Pitfalls That Can Come Back to Bite You at Work, at Home, and at Play; her new young adult novel God Is In The Pancakes is the story of a fifteen-year-old girl whose job at the nursing home takes a complicated term when a friendly elderly patient asks her to help him die.

Hanging Loose Press is one of the oldest independent publishers in Brooklyn, founded in 1966 (as a literary magazine composed of mimeographed pages in an envelope). The press has published the first books by such poetry luminaries as Sherman Alexie, Kimiko Hahn, and... D. Nurkse, as well as many powerful voices of the Brooklyn poetry world, and has been influential in bringing the work of acclaimed performance poets to the page. Tonight at Greenlight several of those local performers take the stage.
Jeni Olin is the author of Blue Collar Holiday and Hold Tight: The Truck Darling Poems.
Sharon Mesmer is the author of The Virgin Formica, In Ordinary Time and The Empty Quarter.
Erica Miriam Fabri is the author of Dialect of a Skirt. Ashleigh Caffey will present paintings inspired by poems in Dialect of a Skirt
Musician Robin Andre will perform solo and with Erica Miriam Fabri.

The memoir is a conflicted and fascinating creation, where memory and truth meet the demands of the marketplace; it is also both an increasingly popular genre in contemporary American letters and the focus of a string of scandals and condemnations. Three authors offer varying perspectives on the memoir during tonight’s panel discussion, shedding light on their own motives and efforts and the state of memoir in general. Adam Langer’s last book was a memoir, My Father’s Bonus War, but he is best known as a novelist; his new novel The Thieves of Manhattan is about a fake memoir (or two) and the lengths to which some writers will go in order to succeed. Beth Raymer’s highly acclaimed memoir Lay the Favorite chronicles her experiences in the high-stakes, high-anxiety underworld of sports betting. Ben Yagoda’s Memoir: A History traces the form from St. Augustine’s Confessions to Robinson Crusoe (the first “fake memoir”) to the present day.

Award-winning Brooklyn-based company Inside Out Tours leads visitors and local residents to great cultural experiences "off the beaten path" in Brooklyn's vibrant and diverse neighborhoods.
Inside Out not only leads you to exciting destinations, they also create destinations, including Greenlight’s new open mic series on the last Thursday of every month this summer! The hour-long open mic, for poets and performers of all ages, will be followed by a brief performance from a featured spoken word poet Radhiyah Ayobami. Radhiyah is a Cave Canem Fellow and has performed at the Brooklyn Public Library, Columbia College Chicago, and the Bowery Poetry Club, among others.
All performing poets will be entered into a drawing to win a tour from Inside Out and books from Greenlight Bookstore. Join us to hear some great performers, or sign up to take the stage!

The Hundred-Foot Journey was born of the friendship between author Richard Morais and the late Ismail Merchant of Merchant & Ivory films. Ismail asked his friend Richard to write something as a tribute to their shared love of French and Indian cuisine, and the resulting novel is the story of the making of an unlikely chef who journeys from his family’s modest restaurant in Mumbai to his elegant restaurant in Paris. Melanie Rehak (author of Girl Sleuth), a Brooklyn resident and new mom, spent a year toiling delightfully inside the kitchen of Applewood Restaurant in Park Slope to get a handle on where the food we consume really comes from – all while navigating the eating habits of a very picky toddler.
