The Hundred-Foot Journey was born of the friendship between author Richard Morais and the late Ismail Merchant of Merchant & Ivory films. Ismail asked his friend Richard to write something as a tribute to their shared love of French and Indian cuisine, and the resulting novel is the story of the making of an unlikely chef who journeys from his family’s modest restaurant in Mumbai to his elegant restaurant in Paris.
